Locality | Northwestern Atlantic |
Remark |
The taste qualities of this fish, unlike the Atlantic herring, are poor. The salted alewife has a specific taste which resembles the smell of fried sunflower seeds and this lowers its quality. This fish should be used for salting or freezing followed by canning and preparation of smoked products. The alewife with low fat content can be better utilized for fish meal. Referred to as Pomolobus mediocris in Ref. 4883. |
